Golf at The Landings: champions made here.

Not all of us play. I know that. But golf here deserves its due respect. Six courses. A state-of-the-art golf performance center. Pros, staff and greenskeepers who hold all of it to a standard you can see from the first tee. Put all of that together and you understand why this island keeps drawing the golfers it does.

The championship stayed on the island

You saw it in August. The 48th GSGA Senior Championship came to the Oakridge Course on August 4th through 6th, and 13 of our members were in the field. Then two of our own battled it out for the title. Danny Nelson finished at 7-under-par and beat Dr. Doug Hanzel on the fourth playoff hole. Mike Combs tied for ninth, so members took three of the top nine spots.

Nelson said Hanzel put it best walking to the 18th tee, the first hole of the playoff: “Well, we kept it on the island.” Hanzel, a four-time champion of the event himself, was gracious about it. “While I did not win my fifth title, it was great to see a fellow Landings member come out on top,” he said. “The trophy stayed on the island!”

Nelson did not undersell what it meant to him. “Winning the Senior Amateur is my biggest win to date,” he said. “Georgia has the best senior golfers in the country, and winning this event, especially at home, is an incredible honor.” He gives the golf here the credit, too. “The competition at The Landings is excellent. I can always get a good game and be constantly challenged by playing one of our six wonderful courses.”

And then our own Club Championship

It kept going with our Club Championship. William Smith won the men’s title and Tara Coates won the women’s. A huge shout out to everyone who stepped up and competed, and to both of our champions.
